David Livingstone becomes the first European to see the Victoria Falls in what is now present-day Zambia-Zimbabwe.

1963

12.31.1963

The Central African Federation officially collapses and splits into Zambia, Malawi and Rhodesia.

1964

1.1.1964

The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland is divided into the independent republics of Zambia and Malawi, and the British-controlled Rhodesia.

10.24.1964

Northern Rhodesia gains independence from the United Kingdom and becomes the Republic of Zambia (Southern Rhodesia remained a colony)

12.1.1964

Malawi, Malta and Zambia join the United Nations.

1994

The Angolan government and UNITA rebels sign the Lusaka Protocol in Zambia, ending 19 years of civil war (localized fighting resumes the next year).
