Islamic conquest of Hispania: Moorish troops led by Tariq ibn-Ziyad land at Gibraltar to begin their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula (Al-Andalus).

Eighty Years' War: The Dutch fleet destroys the anchored Spanish fleet at Gibraltar.

1704

War of the Spanish Succession: Gibraltar is captured by an English and Dutch fleet, commanded by Admiral Sir George Rooke and allied with Archduke Charles.

Spain declares war on the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the siege of Gibraltar begins.

1940

World War II: the French fleet of the Atlantic based at Mers el Kébir, is bombarded by the British fleet, coming from Gibraltar, causing the loss of three battleships: Dunkerque, Provence and Bretagne. One thousand two hundred sailors perish.

The people of Gibraltar vote to remain a British dependency rather than becoming part of Spain.
